Competitive Intelligence (CI) Spider

CI spider

CI Spider Version 1.20 is available for a free, 60-day trial. CI Spider documentation is included in the trial version.

What is CI Spider?

CI spider is a software program that monitors the competitive Internet environment intelligently. CI is becoming more and more important in today's business environments, which are changing more quickly than ever before. The vast amount of information available on the Internet is a valuable resource that the CI Spider can help people having different objectives use effectively. Here are some examples:

  • An IBM Manager can use the CI Spider to look for all web pages containing the words "disk drive" linked from the homepage of Seagate, one of its competitors in hard drive technology.
  • A professor can search to see whether another researcher is doing anything related to "knowledge management," by searching this keyword from the researcher's homepage and the web sites linked from it.
  • A typical web-surfer can use the CI Spider to find out whether a particular web page has anything related to a concept, say, to look for any web pages related to "3D game" in a particular web domain.
  • A market analyst can collect, analyze, and summarize all the web pages in the homepage of a newly established company.
  • A student can analyze the information about a class by collecting and analyzing the web pages from the homepages of other class members using the CI Spider. The student can also search the instructor's homepage to determine what things he or she is most concerned about by summarizing its links and contents.

The CI Spider starts from the URLs a user specifies and follows all the possible links to search for particular keywords that have been entered, or can just collect all the web pages if no keywords are entered. After collecting the required number of web pages, further analysis will be performed. Noun phrases will be extracted from them, which allows the user to know what key concepts are related to the web sites and keywords specified. The concepts can also be visualized in a 2-D map, which categorizes the web pages by collecting them into regions, each of which represents a concept. All these functionalities allow the user automatically to collect information more effectively and represent it in a more meaningful way. CI Spider also allows valuable search sessions to be saved.
