1. Multilingual Web Retrieval (5/2002-present)

Funded by “High Performance Digital Library Classification Systems: From Information Retrieval to Knowledge Management, NSF/ARPA/NASA Digital Library Initiative Phase 2,” May 1999 - April 2002 (IIS-9817473)
 
  • Designed and developed a Chinese Medical Portal (CMedPort), and evaluated its usability and impact to the medical community.

 --Forthcoming in Decision Support Systems (DSS)

  • Designed and developed an English-Chinese cross-lingual Web retrieval system in the IT/Business domain, and evaluated its effectiveness and efficiency.

--Forthcoming in Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST)

  • Designed and developed a Multilingual Web Retrieval system in the IT/Business domain, and evaluated its performance (effectiveness). The system supports retrieval of English, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Japanese documents with English queries.    
 
  • Investigated the Pivot Language translation techniques in cross-lingual information retrieval.

  • Developed a “Dark Web Portal”, a multilingual (English, Spanish and Arabic) testbed of terrorist Websites with search and post-retrieval analysis functionality.

  • Developed an English-Arabic cross-lingual retrieval system. Investigated Arabic language processing techniques.
  • Designed a framework for Name Transliteration based on Hidden Markov Model and Web mining approach, evaluated on English-Chinese and English-Arabic name transliteration.
